Buttonwood Key is located in Saint James City on beautiful Pine Island, Florida.  Our community consists of 26 residential homesites and a 23 acre wetland preserve.

Our History
In 1988, Charles McKenzie began the application process to develop Buttonwood Key.  The uplands portion was a product of canal excavation - the Gulfhaven Canal to the west and Phillips Canal to the north.  To offset the impact of developing the 26 homesites, it was agreed that 23.32 acres of wetlands be deeded to the State of Florida.  The wetlands preserve will be protected by a stormwater swale system.  This will ensure that adequate tidal flushing would continue to occur within the wetlands to maintain the health of the mangrove habitat.

Lee County approved our community under the conditions that a Homeowner's Association be formed to protect the Conservation Easement, the swale area, and the interests of the property owners.  Our road, Buttonwood Key Court, is a private road and a common area as stated in our governing documents.
